Background:
Built on site of 19th-century gaol, overlooking ruins of Inch Abbey and English Mound; surrounded by some of original boundary walls. Founded in 1933, following amalgamation of technical and grammar school on same site; preparatory school added in 1937. Recent additions include new £3m science and technology building, as well as facilities for sports, and information and communication technology. Specialist rooms for practical subjects, computer room, music department, gymnasium, careers room, library, audio-visual aids recording room, assembly hall, dining room, sixth-form common room. School has own playing fields; also joint-use of Down Leisure Centre. Pupils divided into five-house system. Commitment to sport is strong; up to seven girls' hockey teams and five rugby teams every Saturday morning; cricket, tennis and athletics also offered. Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. About a quarter of pupils receive specialist music tuition or take part in choirs or orchestra. Drama also prominent. After-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place. Ethos: 'The pursuit of excellence is inherent, but the school also seeks to create well-rounded, culturally-aware, confident young people who will be the committed citizens of future years.' .
